The Great Famine
3rd May 2017
In fifth class we are studying the Great Famine. Pupils learned about how the disease called blight destroyed the potato crop and the effect this had on the people of Ireland from 1845-1850. We tried to imagine how tough these times were and how people coped with the hunger, spread of disease, eviction of tenants from their homes and emigration. We are also reading 'Under the Hawthorn Tree' by Marita Conlon- McKenna which is set during Famine times.
Today pupils were asked to act out a scene in which a family were evicted from their home by their landlord as they couldn't afford to pay the rent. Here are still images from their drama lesson.
