1 - Tips and Tricks

18th Mar 2020

I will be laying out these messages with the aim of giving you a piece of English, Irish and Maths that you can use and something fun to keep you entertained. I am aware that many of you will not have the time to check these daily, or will be asking older children to help your Junior Infant so I will try to keep them as short and straightforward as possible. I am also aware that the school supplies we normally use are not available so all of these activities can be done with what you have at home. I will also add 'Blast from the Past' pictures to show the children.

One thing I will ask of everyone, is to have an area of the house for school work and a time of the day when it happens. A corner with a chair and tabletop. If that is not possible have a basket that the school supplies go in that can be moved to the table to signal that it is time to learn. This routine will help your child see that play time is paused and the rules for learning have to start (and hopefully make your job a bit easier).

English - for today stick with the letters, spend a few minutes going through the 42 sounds. Mark all the ones your child knows instantly with a tick and focus on the ones they find hard. You could make a list of these and use these sounds to play i-spy or sound hunt (looking for that sound around the house). Your child may need to work on this as their English for a few days. But do not worry, take it slow and when they are ready they can move on to the next step. Again there is no finish line, just making sure your child is exposed to learning every day is our goal. You will be surprised at their abilities when they practice everyday.

You can also find the songs that go with these on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECjT3XFz04U&list=PL4Lm2K-C_b0eSqQS4yHcQW3KaFIiDCFug&index=1 this is a playlist which runs through all the songs and actions

Apps to help

Phonics Fun on Farm free

Jolly Phonics Lessons - this app is free for the first 6 sounds and may help parents who are not familiar with the programme see how lessons are laid out.

Maths - the only lesson for today is to make posters (10min).

You will need 6 pieces of paper (they can be small or large depending on where you want to stick them) draw out 1-5 on the first piece as clearly as you can. then help your child draw a number on each remaining piece of paper.

These can then be stuck up in order in the house, on the stairs or even on the floor. You can play scavenger hunts asking your child to put 2 spoons under the 2 or 4 blocks under the four. You can even mess up the order and see if they notice or hid them around the house. Again if they find this too easy don't worry our goal is not to overwhelm them with work day one, but to find a routine they can maintain.

Irish - this is more difficult. Songs will be the easiest way of revising our Irish . This weeks song is a revision of Cuir ort do Chóta (put on your coat) below.

Fun - Again today's fun section will be goNoodle https://family.gonoodle.com/ we use this daily in the class working mostly on guided dances one of our favourites is Saved by the Bell

In the next post we will focus more on outdoor activities!

I hope everyone is safe, healthy and happy and I hope to see you all again soon - Ms Megaher
